Hydration, reconsidered: separating water myths from modern science

As we step into a new season, it’s time to refresh more than just our routines—let’s upgrade the way we think about hydration. Whether you’re managing a luxury hotel, a vibrant restaurant, or simply navigating a busy lifestyle, staying well-hydrated is essential. But are your habits based on facts or fiction?

Six hydration myths, debunked
1. Everyone needs 8 glasses a day
Not quite. The “8 glasses” rule is outdated. Hydration needs vary depending on gender, body size, activity level, and climate. According to the National Academies of Sciences, men need around 3.7 liters per day and women about 2.7 liters—including fluids from food. The key is to drink based on your personal needs, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
2. Sparkling water dehydrates
False. Sparkling water hydrates just as effectively as still water. Unless it’s heavily sweetened or contains high sodium levels, it’s a perfectly good option to stay refreshed.
3. Cold water slows digestion
There’s no scientific proof that cold water negatively affects digestion. In fact, after physical activity or in warm climates, cold water can help regulate body temperature and feel more satisfying.
4. Natural sparkling water is always healthy
Not necessarily. While many natural sparkling waters contain minerals that are good for health, some can be high in sodium. Consuming these frequently may contribute to water retention or elevated blood pressure. It’s worth checking the label before serving.
5. Coffee and tea don’t count toward hydration
They actually do. Despite their caffeine content, moderate amounts of coffee and tea still contribute to your daily fluid intake. Just keep them as part of a balanced hydration routine and don’t rely on them exclusively.
6. Tap water is unsafe everywhere
Not true. In many countries, tap water is tightly regulated and safe to drink. With the right filtration technology, almost any local source can be transformed into clean, great-tasting water—still or sparkling. It’s about making smart, sustainable choices.
