The results of a study highlighted in the article below shows the impact of human activities on water quality in Ireland. The major issue is the presence of litter, nitrates, and phosphates  in many areas.

Drinking water treatment plants play a key role in collecting water from various sources, before purifying it and filtering out the nasties to make it safe to drink.
